What should you know about facial laser skin resurfacing?

A clinician selects the depth and pattern of treatment according to the concern, skin type, and desired recovery. Ablative treatment removes part of the outer skin and can create a stronger wound-healing response; non-ablative treatment heats deeper tissue while leaving more of the surface intact. CO2 and thulium lasers are examples of systems used for different goals.

Temporary redness, swelling, peeling, sensitivity, or darkening can occur while the surface heals. The treatment may soften uneven texture and fine lines, but it does not stop ageing or replace protection from ultraviolet light. An examination is useful when a changing mark, infection, or active inflammatory skin problem is present.

Discuss recent tanning, a tendency to form raised scars, cold sores, medicines, and products that irritate your skin. Follow instructions about pausing retinoids or exfoliants, cleansing, and antiviral treatment when prescribed. Arrange shade and gentle skincare for recovery, and do not scratch peeling skin or remove crusts.

Use the prescribed cleanser, ointment, or moisturiser and protect healing skin from sunlight. Avoid heat, swimming, fragranced products, and makeup until your clinician says the surface has recovered. A chemical peel may be an alternative for some concerns, but it has its own risks and is not interchangeable with laser treatment.

Contact your clinic for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, delayed healing, or new areas of marked colour change. Eye pain, vision change, or severe swelling around the eyes needs urgent assessment. Painful grouped blisters after resurfacing may indicate a cold sore reaction and should be reported quickly.

Ask which laser depth is proposed, what problem it targets, how long the surface may look raw or red, and which skincare products should be stopped. Clarify sun protection, infection prevention, expected follow-up, and what symptoms require same-day contact.
