What should you know about facial and hand swelling?

Swelling limited to one hand after a fall may accompany a Distal Radius Fracture or another injury. Swelling in several hand joints, especially with stiffness, can occur with inflammatory conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. Facial swelling may instead involve an allergy, infection, dental problem, medication reaction, or a broader fluid-balance issue. The location, speed of onset, pain, skin changes, and other symptoms matter more than appearance alone.

Remove rings and tight bracelets early if the fingers are enlarging. Rest an injured hand, keep it raised when comfortable, and use a wrapped cool pack briefly if that is suitable for you. Do not massage a hot, very painful, or unexplained swollen area. Note when the swelling began, whether it changes during the day, recent injuries, new foods or medicines, fever, breathlessness, and urine changes. A clinician may need to examine the joints, skin, circulation, and general health before suggesting treatment.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat; trouble breathing; faintness; or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Seek prompt assessment for a red, hot, very painful hand, fever, blue or pale fingers, new numbness, severe injury, or swelling that is quickly worsening. Arrange a non-urgent review when swelling persists, keeps returning, or affects both the face and hands without a clear explanation.

Ask which causes fit the timing and distribution, whether a medicine or allergy could be involved, what examination or tests are needed, and which changes should prompt urgent help. Mention pregnancy, kidney or heart conditions, and all recent medicines if relevant.
