Face swelling with sunburn: what to know

Ultraviolet exposure injures surface skin cells and triggers inflammation. Fluid can move into the inflamed tissue, making the face look puffy as well as red, hot, tight, or tender. Leave the sun, cool the face with a clean damp cloth, and rest with the head raised. Drink fluids and avoid heat, scrubs, fragranced products, and direct sun. Never put ice directly on the skin or break blisters. Arrange prompt care for extensive facial swelling, large or numerous blisters, severe pain, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or difficulty drinking.
