Face swelling, redness and itching: what to know

The timing and appearance provide useful clues. A new cleanser, cosmetic, hair product, or medicine can trigger [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/). Dry, recurrent itchy inflammation may fit [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/). Raised patches that move around can be [Hives](/conditions/urticaria/). Scaling, plaques, or a persistent localised rash may have other causes, including [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/) or [Lichen Planus](/conditions/lichen-planus/). A clinician may also consider [Scabies](/conditions/scabies/) or a [Skin Yeast Infection](/conditions/cutaneous-candidiasis/) when the pattern supports it.

Stop any newly introduced facial product and rinse gently with lukewarm water. Apply a cool, clean compress, avoid scratching, and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser if it does not sting. Do not apply steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal cream near the eyes unless a clinician recommends the specific product. Note when symptoms began, what touched the skin, and whether the rash is spreading; this helps an examination.

Get emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt medical care for eye pain, vision change, fever, pus, severe tenderness, or swelling that is rapidly worsening. Recurrent or persistent symptoms also warrant an appointment because treatment depends on the cause, not the itch alone.

Ask which causes fit the rash pattern, whether you should stop a particular product, what is safe near the eyes, and what symptoms should prompt urgent review.
