Face swelling after food: what to know

Food allergy can cause swelling of the lips, face, eyelids, or tongue soon after exposure. Hives, itching, stomach cramps, vomiting, wheezing, cough, dizziness, or an itchy throat may occur at the same time. Reactions can change quickly, and a previous mild reaction does not predict the severity of a future one.

Facial swelling can also have non-allergic causes, so the timing and food involved matter. A clinician may ask about ingredients, restaurant meals, medicines, exercise, and earlier episodes. Allergy testing may be considered after assessment; do not deliberately eat a suspected trigger to test yourself.

Stop eating the suspected food and keep the packaging or ingredient information. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector and signs of a severe reaction, use it as instructed and call emergency services. Do not rely on an antihistamine for breathing or circulation symptoms. Arrange follow-up to identify triggers and make an avoidance and emergency plan.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, a hoarse voice, tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can indicate anaphylaxis. Do not drive yourself if symptoms are severe. Even when symptoms improve, follow the emergency advice you are given because symptoms can return.

Ask whether the episode fits a food allergy, whether testing is appropriate, which foods or ingredients to avoid, and how to use emergency treatment if swelling happens again.
