Face sunburn treatment: what to know

Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to ultraviolet exposure. Facial skin may feel hot, tender, tight, or itchy, with visible redness and later peeling. Swelling can occur because inflamed skin draws fluid into the affected area. Blisters suggest a deeper burn; do not pop them. Move out of direct sun and gently cool the face with a clean, cool damp cloth or a brief cool shower. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser or [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) while the skin is slightly damp. Drink fluids, avoid scrubs and peeling products, and do not apply ice directly. Use shade and a wide-brimmed hat; wait until the skin settles before using sunscreen on irritated areas. Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, marked facial swelling, eye involvement, severe pain, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Get urgent help if breathing becomes difficult or swelling affects the mouth or throat. Persistent redness, worsening pain, pus, or increasing warmth can indicate infection.
