Face Rash Around the Nose

Dry, itchy, inflamed skin may occur with atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis after exposure to a product, tissue, cleanser, or cosmetic. Moisture and friction in the creases can contribute to intertrigo. Scaly plaques may occur with psoriasis, while a ring-shaped spreading patch can occur with ringworm. Heat rash, scabies, and drug rash have different patterns and histories. A nose-area rash is not enough to identify one condition, especially when several causes look alike.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing, picking, fragranced products, and newly added cosmetics. Pat the area dry, especially within the folds, and avoid sharing towels. Note itch, pain, scale, blisters, discharge, spread, and any new medicine or exposure. Do not use steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams without advice, because the wrong treatment can alter the appearance or aggravate some rashes.

Seek urgent care if the rash spreads rapidly, becomes very painful, forms blisters or open sores, involves the eyes, or comes with fever or facial swelling. A rash after a new medicine needs prompt medical advice. Arrange a dermatology review for a persistent, recurrent, or unexplained rash.

Ask whether the pattern fits dermatitis, infection, or another condition; whether a swab or skin test is useful; and which products and treatments are safe near the nose.
