Face peeling after sunburn: what to know

Sunburn damages surface skin cells, and the body gradually sheds them as the area heals. Redness, tenderness, tightness, and flaking can occur; fluid-filled Skin Blisters suggest a more significant injury. Peeling Skin can feel tempting to pull, but removing attached skin exposes sensitive tissue. Repeated sun injury contributes to Sun-Damaged Skin over time.

Cool the face with a clean, damp cloth and apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser or Emollient Therapy product. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and leave loose flakes to detach naturally. Avoid scrubs, retinoids, fragranced products, heat, and cosmetic peels until the skin has recovered. Stay out of direct sun and use physical protection such as a hat; sunscreen should not sting or be applied to open skin.

Seek prompt medical care for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, fever, dizziness, vomiting, or eye pain or vision changes. A review is also appropriate when Skin Redness spreads, the area is not improving, or the burn affects a young child. Topical Corticosteroids should be used on the face only when a clinician recommends them.
