What should you know about face is red and swollen?

Swelling soon after a food, medicine, sting, or cosmetic may be an allergic reaction, especially when itching or raised welts are present. Irritation after a new product may stay where it was applied and may sting. One-sided, painful, warm, or spreading swelling can occur with infection or a local dental or sinus problem. Rosacea commonly presents with facial redness, but marked new swelling needs a broader assessment.

Stop any newly applied product and gently rinse residue from the skin. Keep your head raised, use a cool compress, and avoid rubbing or squeezing the area. Do not apply leftover prescription creams or home mixtures without advice. Photograph the swelling, record its onset, and list recent foods, medicines, stings, procedures, and products for the clinician.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; breathing or swallowing difficulty; wheezing; faintness; or rapidly spreading hives. Seek same-day medical assessment for painful spreading redness, fever, pus, severe headache, vision changes, or swelling around an eye.
