Face fungal rash: what to know

Fungal infection can spread across the outer layer of skin and may produce a patch with a clearer centre, a more active scaly edge, or gradual enlargement. It is not confirmed by appearance alone. Contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash, scabies, and other rashes can overlap in redness, dryness, and itching. A facial rash may also be affected by cosmetics, sweat, shaving, or steroid creams.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, pillowcases, makeup, or face cloths. Pause new fragranced products and avoid scratching. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal product is suitable for the face; do not use steroid cream on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician has directed you, because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to spread. Follow the product directions and seek a review if it does not settle.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is near the eye, involves the lips, is spreading, becomes painful, produces pus, or does not improve with appropriate care. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with trouble breathing, rapidly worsening swelling, or severe eye symptoms. Children, people with reduced immunity, and anyone taking medicines that affect the skin should obtain advice early.
