Face and hand swelling: what to know

Swelling can affect one hand or both and may be soft, tight, painful, warm, or itchy. An injury can cause local swelling; a distal radius fracture may follow a fall or impact and usually needs examination and imaging. Rheumatoid arthritis can present with swollen, stiff joints, often with symptoms in more than one area. Face swelling may also occur with an allergic reaction, infection, medication effect, or a wider fluid-balance problem. The pattern and timing help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Note when the swelling started, whether it is spreading, and any new food, medicine, bite, injury, fever, rash, or joint stiffness. Remove rings before finger swelling increases. Rest an injured hand, keep it raised, and use a wrapped cool pack briefly if comfortable. Do not tightly wrap a swollen hand or take someone else’s medicine. Arrange medical review if swelling persists, returns, or limits movement; a clinician may examine the hand and review your medicines.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek urgent assessment for sudden one-sided weakness, severe pain, a cold or blue hand, loss of sensation, fever with red hot skin, or swelling after a significant injury. These signs can indicate an emergency that should not be managed at home.
