Dry and itchy eyes: what to know

Long periods of screen use can reduce blinking, allowing the tear layer to evaporate. Air conditioning, fans, wind, smoke, and dusty surroundings may worsen the sensation. Allergy can produce itching and watering even when the eyes feel dry; Allergic Conjunctivitis may occur with sneezing or a blocked, runny nose from Allergic Rhinitis. Some medicines, eyelid inflammation, and contact lenses can also contribute. Dryness is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so the pattern and accompanying signs matter.

Take regular breaks from close screen work and consciously blink while reading. Keep fans or air vents from blowing directly at your face, avoid smoke, and use clean hands around the eyes. Lubricating eye drops may help some people; ask a pharmacist which type suits you, especially if you wear lenses or use other drops. Cool compresses can ease allergy-related itching. Consider whether House Dust Mite Allergy or Pet Allergy is linked to flare-ups, and do not rub the eyes because rubbing can further disturb the surface.

Seek prompt care for pain, new light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, pronounced redness, injury, chemical splash, or discharge that makes the eyelids stick. Contact a clinician if one eye remains affected, symptoms repeatedly interrupt sleep, or self-care does not help. Contact-lens users should remove lenses and obtain advice sooner when discomfort, redness, or vision change develops, because the cornea may need checking.
