What should you know about eyes burning fever?

A fever with burning or irritated eyes may accompany a respiratory infection, especially when there is a cough, sore throat, runny nose, tiredness, or body aches. A common cold, COVID-19, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or croup can have overlapping symptoms; the pattern and the person’s age and health affect the next step.

Fever with a new rash, a painful swollen area of skin, or exposure to untreated animals or animal products needs a clinician’s assessment because other infections, including chickenpox, cellulitis, or brucellosis, can present differently. Burning eyes alone does not identify the illness.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and avoid rubbing the eyes. Wash hands often and avoid sharing towels while fever or possible infection is present. Reduce bright light if it worsens the burning, and use a clean cool compress over closed eyes for comfort. Stay home from close contact when you feel unwell and follow local advice about respiratory illness.

Use fever relief only if it is suitable for you and exactly as directed on the label or by a clinician. Do not give a child medicine intended for an adult, and ask for advice when pregnancy, chronic illness, or other medicines are involved.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, unusual drowsiness, a seizure, severe dehydration, a stiff neck, severe headache, strong light sensitivity, eye pain, vision change, or a rapidly spreading rash. A baby or a person with a weakened immune system should be assessed sooner when fever is present.

Contact a clinician if the fever persists, returns after improving, or comes with worsening cough, chest pain, severe eye redness, or a painful skin area. Ask about testing when a contagious infection is possible.
