What should you know about eyelid burning and itching?

New cosmetics, cleansers, lash glue, eye drops, or hair products can trigger contact dermatitis on eyelid skin. Dry, scaly, cracked skin may occur with eczema, including atopic dermatitis or asteatotic eczema. Plaques may occur with psoriasis or lichen planus, while hives tend to create raised itchy areas that come and go.

Moist rash in a fold can need assessment for a skin yeast infection. Night-time itch, household spread, or lesions elsewhere may raise the question of scabies. These clues guide an examination; they do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.

Stop any newly introduced eye-area product and rinse gently with clean lukewarm water if exposure is suspected. Use a bland moisturiser on outer eyelid skin, keep hands away, and avoid rubbing, scrubbing, and eye makeup while irritated.

Do not put steroid, antibiotic, antifungal, or anti-itch products on eyelids unless a clinician recommends the specific product and duration. The wrong treatment can worsen irritation or mask infection.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision change, strong light sensitivity, pus, severe swelling, fever, or redness extending around the eye. Arrange review when symptoms persist, recur, disturb sleep, or accompany a spreading rash or eyelash loss.

Tell the clinician when symptoms began and list every product touching the face or eyes. Ask whether the pattern fits contact dermatitis, eczema, infection, or another condition, and which treatment is safe for eyelid use.
