What should you know about eyelash mites demodex?

Demodex live in hair follicles and oil glands. Around the lashes, a clinician may look for sleeve-like debris at the lash roots, flaky material, redness, or irritation. These signs are not specific on their own: dry eye, blepharitis, allergy, and other eyelid conditions can feel similar.

A diagnosis is based on the pattern of symptoms and an eyelid examination, sometimes with close inspection of lashes. Demodex can occur alongside rosacea, so facial flushing or recurrent eyelid inflammation is worth mentioning during the visit.

Use a clinician-approved eyelid cleanser and follow the directions carefully. Wash hands before touching the eye area, avoid sharing eye makeup or towels, and replace old eye products if advised. Do not scrape debris from the lash roots or apply non-eye-safe chemicals.

Treatment depends on the examination and may include a medicated shampoo treatment or another product selected for the eyelids. Keep any cleanser or medicine out of the eye, and stop and seek advice if burning, swelling, or vision changes follow an application.

Book an assessment for persistent itching, recurrent crusting, lash loss, or eyelid redness. Seek prompt care for eye pain, reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, or pus. Those symptoms can involve the eye surface and need more than routine eyelid hygiene.
