Laser energy is absorbed by tattoo pigment and fragments it into smaller particles that the body gradually clears. Different inks respond differently, and cosmetic pigments may change colour rather than simply fade. The eyelid and area around the eye are delicate, so the clinician must confirm the mark is suitable for removal and protect the eye from stray energy.

A picosecond laser delivers very short pulses, while a Q-switched laser uses another established pulse pattern. The choice depends on pigment colour, depth, location, skin tone, previous treatment, and the equipment available to the qualified practitioner.

Choose a clinician experienced with periocular treatment and disclose eye disease, cold-sore history, medicines, recent tanning, and previous attempts at removal. Ask how the eye will be shielded; ordinary sunglasses are not a substitute for the protection advised by the treating team.

Redness, warmth, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, crusting, or temporary lightening or darkening can follow treatment. Keep the area clean, do not pick crusts, avoid sun exposure, and use only the aftercare products recommended for the site. Pigment fades gradually, and the clinician decides whether another session is appropriate after healing.

Get urgent medical attention for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, flashes, new floaters, severe swelling, blistering, spreading redness, or pus-like drainage after treatment. These symptoms can signal an eye injury or skin infection and need prompt assessment.

Ask which laser is suitable for the pigment, how the eye will be protected, whether the mark may contain cosmetic pigments, and what alternatives exist if complete fading is not realistic. Discuss possible colour change, scarring or texture change, aftercare, and the signs that require urgent review.
