Eye swollen and red: what should you know?

Redness can come from enlarged surface blood vessels after dryness, smoke, dust, rubbing, or prolonged screen use. Itchy, watery eyes fit an allergic pattern, while a gritty feeling or discharge may occur with conjunctivitis. A tender lump at the eyelid edge suggests a local eyelid problem. These symptoms overlap, so severity and associated changes matter more than colour alone.

Rest the eyes from screens, avoid smoke and dusty air, and use a cool clean compress if itching or puffiness is prominent. Do not rub the eye or use leftover prescription drops. Remove contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms have cleared. Wash hands often, especially before applying any product near the eye.

Seek urgent assessment for moderate or severe pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, a chemical splash, penetrating injury, or swelling that moves beyond the eyelid. Fever or difficulty moving the eye also needs prompt care. If redness persists or repeatedly returns, arrange a clinical review to identify the trigger.
