What should you know about eye surgery for droopy eyes?

Droopy eyelids may reflect dermatochalasis, in which loose upper-eyelid skin folds over the lid. Brow position, eyelid muscle strength, fat pockets, and conditions affecting the eyelid can also change the appearance or field of view. A specialist examines vision, eyelid movement, brow support, dryness, and medical history before recommending an operation.

Blepharoplasty is different from a treatment that only tightens surface skin. Non-surgical options such as plasma pen treatment or radiofrequency skin tightening may suit selected concerns, but they do not remove the same amount of tissue or address every cause of a low eyelid.

At consultation, describe heaviness, brow fatigue, headaches, visual obstruction, dry eyes, previous eye procedures, and all medicines or supplements. The clinician may ask about contact lenses and arrange visual-field or eye-surface checks. Follow instructions about medicines, smoking, and bringing someone home if sedation is planned.

After surgery, swelling, bruising, tightness, and temporary blurred vision can occur. Keep the area clean, use prescribed drops or ointment, rest with the head raised, and avoid rubbing, strenuous activity, and contact lenses until cleared. Recovery varies with the extent of surgery and your healing.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening pain, increasing redness, fever, pus-like drainage, bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure, or inability to close the eye. Seek emergency care for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, marked one-sided swelling, weakness, or difficulty breathing.

Ask what is causing the droop, whether surgery is functional, cosmetic, or both, what tissue will be treated, and how dry-eye risk will be assessed. Clarify expected swelling, wound care, activity limits, follow-up visits, and which alternative is appropriate for your eyelid anatomy.
