What should you know about eye ringworm?

Ringworm commonly forms an enlarging, scaly or dry patch with a more active edge, though appearance varies and the rash may not make a perfect ring. Skin near the eye can be mistaken for eczema, irritation, or another rash. It is caused by a fungus, not a worm, and can spread through close contact or shared towels, cosmetics, bedding, pets, or other surfaces. A clinician may inspect the border and take a skin sample when the diagnosis is uncertain. Infection on the eyelid skin is different from infection inside the eye.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, pillowcases, makeup, or face cloths; wash fabrics that contact the rash. A clinician may prescribe a topical antifungal treatment for suitable external skin, or an oral antifungal treatment when the infection is extensive, persistent, or difficult to reach. Never put cream into the eye unless it is specifically made for ocular use and prescribed. Have household pets or close contacts assessed if they have suspicious patches.

Arrange prompt medical review for a rash on the eyelid, near the eyelashes, or close to the eye, especially if it is spreading or treatment has not helped. Seek urgent eye care for eye pain, light sensitivity, discharge, swelling that affects vision, or any change in sight. Fever, rapidly increasing redness, or marked tenderness also warrants prompt assessment because these features may signal a different or additional problem.
