What should you know about eye redness and itching treatment?

Redness and itching on the eyelids or nearby skin may follow a new cleanser, makeup product, hair dye, eye drop, or metal contact. Atopic dermatitis can cause a dry, itchy, sensitive rash, while contact dermatitis follows exposure to a particular substance. Hives tend to appear as raised itchy areas that come and go. Scaling or rash elsewhere can provide clues to psoriasis, asteatotic eczema, lichen planus, scabies, or a skin yeast infection. Eye-surface redness, discharge, light sensitivity, or blurred vision may require eye assessment rather than skin treatment.

Stop suspected irritants and avoid rubbing. Rinse away a product that has entered the eye with clean lukewarm water, and pause eye makeup and contact lenses while symptoms continue. Use a cool compress for comfort and a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser on intact eyelid skin, keeping products out of the eye. A clinician may recommend a targeted anti-inflammatory, allergy treatment, or antimicrobial approach after examining the area. Do not use steroid or antibiotic preparations near the eye without specific advice, because the wrong product can worsen some conditions or obscure the diagnosis.

Get urgent help for severe eye pain, vision change, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, fever, pain with eye movement, or breathing or throat symptoms. Seek prompt review if redness spreads, discharge develops, the skin becomes crusted or very tender, or symptoms follow a chemical exposure. Arrange a routine appointment when itching persists, keeps returning, or interferes with sleep despite removing likely triggers.
