Red, watery eyes sensitive to light: what to know

Watery redness can occur when the eye is trying to wash away smoke, dust, wind or a tiny irritant. Dryness can paradoxically cause extra tears, while allergic conjunctivitis often adds itching, sneezing or symptoms in both eyes. Conjunctivitis may cause discharge and eyelids stuck together on waking.

Light sensitivity suggests that the eye is uncomfortable when exposed to brightness. If it is strong, new or paired with pain, blurred vision or a headache, the problem may involve more than the outer surface. A clinician can examine the cornea and other structures safely.

Move away from smoke, dust and strong airflow, and rest the eyes in softer light. Rinse away loose irritants with clean water and use a cool compress over closed lids if soothing. Wash hands, avoid rubbing, and pause contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms have settled or been reviewed.

Do not share towels, cosmetics or eye drops if discharge is present. Avoid using someone else's prescription medicine. If tearing continues or light sensitivity is interfering with reading, driving or work, arrange a clinical assessment rather than relying on home care.

Seek urgent care for eye pain, reduced vision, a cloudy spot on the eye, marked light sensitivity, swelling, nausea, unequal pupils or symptoms after an injury. Rinse a chemical exposure immediately and obtain emergency help. A contact lens wearer with redness and light sensitivity should be assessed promptly, even when discharge is absent.

Ask whether the tearing looks allergic, infectious or irritative, and whether the cornea needs checking. Ask about suitable lubricating treatment, hygiene around discharge, and when lenses, swimming or makeup can safely resume.
