What should you know about eye photosensitivity symptoms?

Some people notice a need to avoid ordinary indoor light, while others develop eyelid redness, dryness, stinging or a sunburn-like reaction after outdoor exposure. Headache or difficulty keeping the eyes open can accompany light discomfort. Symptoms may involve one or both eyes. A visible skin reaction can occur with a medication-related photosensitive drug rash, but light sensitivity can also come from an eye problem, so the symptom pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Move to shade or a dimmer room, wear comfortable UV-protective sunglasses outdoors and avoid staring directly at bright sources. Do not rub the eyes. Use only eye drops recommended for your symptoms, especially if you wear contact lenses. Record triggers, duration, medicines and any rash; this gives the clinician useful detail when assessing sun sensitivity or another cause.

Arrange an eye or medical assessment if symptoms persist, recur or interfere with reading, driving or normal indoor light. Seek urgent care for sudden vision change, severe pain, pronounced redness, injury, pus, nausea with eye pain or swelling that is rapidly increasing.

Ask whether the symptoms are coming from the eye surface, eyelid skin or a medicine, and whether contact lenses or current drops should be paused. Explain whether bright light causes pain, watering, rash or blurred vision.
