What should you know about eye photosensitivity causes?

Light sensitivity can affect the eyelids and nearby skin, or it can feel like discomfort inside the eyes. A medication may make skin react more strongly after sun exposure; this is called a photosensitive drug reaction and can sometimes resemble a drug rash. Irritated or inflamed skin may also become more reactive. The timing matters: note whether symptoms began after a new medicine, cosmetic, supplement or change in outdoor exposure.

Use wraparound sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat outdoors, and seek shade when light is intense. Choose gentle, fragrance-free products around the eyelids and avoid testing several new products at once. Keep a list of medicines and supplements, including recent changes, for a clinician or pharmacist. Do not stop an essential prescription on your own; ask whether an alternative or timing change is appropriate.

Book a medical review when sensitivity is new, recurring, worsening or linked with a rash. Seek urgent help for severe eye pain, blurred vision, marked swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering or skin peeling. A clinician can distinguish a medication reaction from an eye disorder and decide whether treatment or testing is needed.
