What should you know about eye itching and swelling?

Allergy commonly causes itching with watery eyes and puffiness, while contact dermatitis may affect the eyelid skin after exposure to cosmetics, cleansers, hair dye, or eye products. Atopic dermatitis can cause dry, itchy, scaly skin around the eyes. Infection becomes more concerning when there is tenderness, warmth, sticky discharge, or redness that is spreading. Hives may cause sudden swelling that comes and goes. These patterns guide assessment but do not replace an examination.

Record when the swelling began, whether one or both eyes are involved, and any new product, medicine, bite, injury, or respiratory symptoms. Avoid squeezing bumps or applying steroid cream near the eye unless a clinician has directed you.

Use a cool clean compress for short periods, keep your hands away from the eyes, and pause contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms settle. Rinse away a suspected surface irritant with clean water. Do not share towels, and do not use antibiotic, anaesthetic, or steroid eye products without suitable advice. A clinician can determine whether allergy treatment, skin care, or another treatment is appropriate.

Get urgent care for reduced vision, severe pain, pain when moving the eye, strong light sensitivity, fever with worsening swelling, or swelling that makes the eye difficult to open. Emergency help is needed if eye swelling occurs with trouble breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat.

Ask whether the swelling is from the eyelid skin or the eye itself, which exposures to avoid, whether you should stop lenses or cosmetics, and how quickly worsening symptoms should be reviewed.
