What should you know about eye impetigo?

The skin may become red, sore, itchy, or moist, followed by small blisters, erosions, or yellow-brown crusting. The infection can spread through scratching, shared towels, pillowcases, cosmetics, or close skin contact. Crusting skin around the eye can have several causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm impetigo. Eczema, including atopic dermatitis, may create broken skin that is easier for bacteria to infect.

Because the eyelid is close to the eye itself, a clinician should distinguish a superficial skin infection from inflammation involving the eye or tissues around it. Do not put household antiseptics, non-prescribed creams, or leftover eye medicine on the area.

Arrange a prompt medical review, especially when crusting is spreading or the eyelid is swollen. Gently wash your hands before and after touching the area, avoid rubbing or picking, and use a clean towel and pillowcase. Do not share face cloths, cosmetics, or contact lenses. A clinician may recommend treatment such as topical antibiotic therapy for a small, superficial area or antibiotics for skin infection when the infection is more extensive; use the prescribed medicine exactly as directed.

Seek urgent medical care if there is eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, pain when moving the eye, marked swelling, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or difficulty opening the eye. These features can signal involvement beyond the surface skin and should not be managed with home care alone.
