Eye pain and light sensitivity: what should you know?

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, means ordinary light feels uncomfortable or painful. Dryness, a scratched surface, migraine, or inflammation can produce this response. Conjunctivitis may cause watering, grittiness, and redness; allergic conjunctivitis is more often itchy and watery. The combination of deep eye pain and light sensitivity is more concerning than mild irritation, particularly when one eye is affected or vision looks different.

Move to softer lighting and wear sunglasses outdoors, but do not cover an injured eye tightly. Rest from screens and avoid rubbing. Remove contact lenses and do not put them back until a clinician says it is appropriate. A cool clean compress may help surface discomfort. If something entered the eye, rinse gently with clean water; persistent pain after rinsing needs prompt assessment.

Seek same-day medical advice for ongoing pain with light sensitivity, a red eye, blurred vision, discharge, headache, nausea, or a recent contact-lens problem. Go to emergency care for sudden vision loss, severe pain, an eye injury, chemical exposure, or new weakness or confusion. Do not drive if vision is impaired or bright light makes it unsafe.
