Eye hurting and red: what should you know?

Redness happens when small blood vessels on the eye surface widen. Irritation, dryness, an allergy, or infection may cause it. Allergic conjunctivitis often affects both eyes and may bring itching and watering. Conjunctivitis can cause redness, gritty discomfort, watering, or sticky discharge. Pain that is deep, severe, or paired with blurred vision is a different pattern and deserves medical attention rather than being assumed to be simple irritation.

Wash your hands before and after touching the area, and avoid rubbing. Pause contact-lens use and do not share towels, pillows, eye drops, or makeup. A clean cool compress can soothe surface irritation. Remove obvious dust only with clean water; do not use tweezers or put household products in the eye. If discharge is present, gently clean the lids with fresh cotton or a clean cloth each time.

Get urgent assessment for severe pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, a foreign body that will not wash out, chemical exposure, injury, swelling around the eye, or headache with nausea. Seek emergency help for sudden vision loss or an eye that becomes very painful and hard to open. Arrange a clinical review if redness or pain is worsening, or if symptoms are not settling.
