What should you know about eye fat transfer?

Fat is taken from a donor area, prepared, and placed in small amounts beneath the eye or in nearby facial areas. The aim is to soften a hollow transition, not to treat every cause of under-eye darkness or puffiness. Tear trough hollows are different from excess skin, prominent fat pads, or pigment, so a consultation must distinguish contour loss from surface colour and swelling. Results can change as healing progresses, and the amount of fat that remains varies between individuals.

During consultation, disclose medicines, allergies, previous fillers or eyelid procedures, eye conditions, and any tendency to prolonged bruising. Your clinician should explain the donor site, anaesthesia, placement plan, expected swelling, and follow-up. Arrange time away from strenuous activity as advised and follow wound-care instructions carefully. Dermal fillers may be discussed as an alternative for selected hollows, but they have different materials, timing, and risks. Lip fillers are unrelated to correcting the eye contour.

Contact the treating team about worsening pain, increasing redness, fever, drainage, or swelling that is not following the expected recovery pattern. Seek emergency eye care for sudden vision loss or blurring, severe eye pain, marked one-sided swelling, or unusual skin colour around the treatment area.
