What should you know about eye and hearing test?

An eye assessment may check visual clarity, eye movements, pupils, the surface of the eye, and sometimes pressure or the back of the eye. A hearing test measures how softly you can hear different sounds and whether each ear responds differently. Results can point to a problem in the ear canal, middle ear, inner ear, or hearing nerve, but a test result is interpreted alongside symptoms and examination findings.

Earwax buildup can reduce sound reaching the eardrum and may affect hearing until the canal is examined. Recurrent hearing change with ringing, pressure, or dizziness may need assessment for conditions such as Meniere's Disease.

Bring glasses, contact-lens details, hearing devices, and a list of medicines. Explain when the change began, whether it affects one or both sides, and whether it fluctuates. Avoid inserting objects into the ear before an appointment. During a hearing test, follow the instructions carefully and respond whenever you hear a sound, even if it is faint. Ask when and how results will be explained.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden hearing loss, sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a new neurological symptom, or an eye injury. Prompt review is also appropriate for rapidly worsening hearing, severe dizziness, discharge from the ear, or a painful red eye. Do not delay because a previous test was normal if a new change has appeared.

Ask which test is appropriate, what each result means, and whether the findings suggest a reversible blockage or a problem needing specialist review. Ask when repeat testing is useful.
