What should you know about extremely itchy groin?

Red, sore skin in a fold can occur with intertrigo, where moisture and rubbing irritate the skin. A skin yeast infection may cause an itchy, red rash that involves folds and may have small nearby spots. Contact with a new soap, detergent, lubricant, pad, clothing dye, or grooming product can trigger contact dermatitis. The itch can involve the outer skin without coming from an internal genital problem.

Look for the location, border, scaling, moisture, blisters, cracks, discharge, and timing. Avoid assuming the cause from itch alone; examination is useful when the appearance is unclear or symptoms recur.

Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry carefully, and wear loose, breathable underwear. Change out of damp clothing promptly and pause fragranced washes, sprays, powders, and shaving until the skin recovers. Try not to scratch; a cool compress can reduce the urge briefly. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether topical antifungal treatment is appropriate, because steroid creams used alone can worsen some fungal rashes.

Do not share towels, and avoid sexual contact if touching is painful or the skin is broken. Arrange review if symptoms do not improve with sensible care or return repeatedly.

Seek prompt care for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, skin breakdown, blisters, or swelling of the genitals. Get an assessment for a persistent rash, new lump, unusual discharge, pain when urinating, or symptoms after a new sexual exposure. Urgent help is needed if swelling affects urination or breathing.

Ask whether the rash looks like intertrigo, yeast, or contact dermatitis; which product is suitable; how long to use it; and what should happen if it fails. Tell the clinician about new products, sweating, antibiotics, diabetes, sexual exposure, and previous treatments.
