What should you know about extreme tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, often during an infection. The throat may look red, the tonsils may be enlarged or coated, and glands in the neck can become tender. Viral infections are common, while Strep Throat is a bacterial possibility that needs clinical assessment. Earache can occur because the throat and ear share nerve pathways; it does not by itself show that the ear is infected.

Rest, take frequent sips of fluid, and choose cool or soft foods if swallowing is painful. Use only medicines that are suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician’s instructions. Antibiotic Treatment is useful only when a clinician identifies a bacterial reason; it does not treat viral tonsillitis.

Keep a note of changes from one day to the next, including whether symptoms are improving, stable or worsening. This helps a clinician judge urgency and choose focused checks.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, are drooling, have trouble breathing, develop a muffled voice, or cannot open your mouth normally. One-sided swelling, rapidly worsening pain, neck swelling, marked drowsiness or signs of dehydration also need prompt assessment because an abscess or airway problem may need treatment.

Ask whether the appearance suggests a viral infection or Strep Throat, whether testing is needed, how to manage pain safely, and which symptoms should trigger emergency help. Mention how long the illness has lasted, your ability to drink, fever, rash, earache and any previous episodes.
