Short answer

Extreme tiredness in the third trimester can follow poor sleep and physical strain, but a marked change should be assessed by your maternity team.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why energy may fall late in pregnancy

A larger abdomen, back discomfort, frequent urination, reflux and difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position can interrupt rest. Pregnancy also increases physical demands. Anemia, infection, thyroid problems, high blood pressure or emotional strain may add to fatigue. Pay attention to whether the change is gradual or sudden and whether it comes with headache, vision changes, swelling, pain, fever, breathlessness or reduced fetal movement.

How to conserve energy

Break chores into small tasks, sit while preparing food, use pillows to support sleep and accept help with shopping or lifting. Drink regularly and eat nourishing meals or snacks. Keep antenatal appointments and report fatigue that affects walking, eating, bathing or caring for yourself. Do not self-treat with iron or stimulants without advice; the right treatment depends on the cause and your pregnancy history.

Signs needing prompt attention

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced fetal movement, bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision disturbance, sudden swelling, chest pain or trouble breathing. Seek same-day advice for fever, fainting, persistent vomiting, palpitations, severe dizziness or rapidly worsening weakness. Call emergency services if you cannot stay awake, feel confused or are struggling to breathe.

Questions to ask

Ask whether your blood count and blood pressure need checking, how to improve sleep safely, what activity is suitable, and exactly when to call about fetal movement or labor symptoms.

Questions people ask

Why can sleep become harder late in pregnancy?

Physical discomfort, fetal movement, reflux and frequent urination can interrupt sleep and reduce daytime energy.

When is third-trimester fatigue more concerning?

A sudden or rapidly worsening change, especially with breathing trouble, fainting, fever or reduced fetal movement, needs prompt advice.
