Extreme tiredness before labor: what to know

A growing baby, interrupted sleep, physical discomfort and the effort of carrying extra weight can drain energy. Tiredness can also accompany anemia, thyroid problems, infection, dehydration, low mood or poor nutrition. It does not by itself show that labor has started. Notice whether the exhaustion is new, whether rest helps, and whether it comes with contractions, fluid leakage, bleeding, fever, breathlessness, headache or reduced fetal movement.

Rest in short periods, drink regularly, eat small balanced meals and ask someone else to handle strenuous tasks. Keep a simple record of sleep, food, fluids and other symptoms. Do not start iron, herbal products or other medicines without checking with your maternity clinician. At your next contact, mention fatigue that limits walking, eating, washing or usual daily activities; they may review your blood count and other possible causes.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes, fainting, chest pain, trouble breathing or marked swelling. Seek same-day advice for fever, repeated vomiting, dizziness, palpitations or exhaustion that is rapidly worsening. If you feel unsafe or cannot stay awake, get emergency help and do not drive yourself.

Ask whether anemia, infection, blood pressure or thyroid changes could explain your symptoms; which warning signs matter for your stage of pregnancy; and what level of activity, rest and fluid intake is suitable for you.
