What should you know about extreme sore throat?

Do not start leftover antibiotics, because they do not treat viral causes.

Seek urgent help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, develop rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or sound unusually muffled. Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe one-sided pain, difficulty opening your mouth, dehydration, a high fever, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
