What should you know about extreme rectal itching?

The skin around the anus can react to fragranced wipes, soaps, detergents, moisture, stool residue, or repeated wiping. Contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis may cause itch, dryness, or soreness. Do not share towels if an infection is suspected.

Arrange prompt care for severe pain, bleeding, pus, fever, open sores, rapidly spreading redness, a new lump, or symptoms that disturb sleep despite gentle care. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or widespread blistering. Children, pregnant patients, and people with weakened immunity should obtain tailored advice early.
