What should you know about extra thick toe nails?

A thick nail may become hard to cut, yellow or white, crumbly, ridged, lifted from the nail bed or uncomfortable in shoes. Nail fungus commonly causes thickening with colour and texture changes, while nail psoriasis can produce pits, separation or debris beneath the nail. Repeated pressure from tight shoes or an old injury can alter growth as well. These appearances overlap, and not every thick nail is fungal.

Keep feet clean and dry, choose shoes with room at the toes, and trim the nail straight across after bathing when it is softer. Do not dig into the corners or share clippers. A clinician may examine the nail and take a sample before recommending treatment. Options can include oral antifungal treatment for confirmed fungus; laser treatment for nail fungus may also be discussed, although suitability depends on the diagnosis and nail changes.

Arrange an appointment if thickening persists, affects several nails, causes pain or keeps catching on socks. Seek prompt care for redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, an open sore or difficulty walking. People with diabetes, reduced circulation or reduced sensation should have foot changes assessed early rather than trimming aggressively at home.
