What should you know about extensive cellulitis?

Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin rather than only the surface. The area can become red, warm, swollen, and painful, and its edges may extend over time. Fever or chills can occur. A break in the skin, insect bite, wound, or athlete's foot can provide an entry point, although the original opening may be hard to see.

People with diabetes or reduced immune defenses may need especially careful assessment because infection can progress and healing may be harder. A clinician distinguishes cellulitis from other causes of red or swollen skin by examining the area and considering the wider symptoms.

Arrange same-day medical advice for a spreading, hot, tender, or swollen area, particularly when fever is present. Treatment commonly involves prescription antibiotics chosen for the suspected bacteria and location; take them exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes it.

Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and elevate a swollen limb when practical.
