Short answer

Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular womb tightenings that may feel uncomfortable and often ease with rest or a change of activity, while labour contractions become more organised and intense.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What practice contractions feel like

During a Braxton Hicks contraction, the abdomen may become firm and then soften. Episodes can be unevenly spaced and may settle after hydration, rest, emptying your bladder, or changing position. They do not by themselves show that the cervix is opening.

Labour can begin differently from person to person. The useful clues are a pattern that becomes regular, contractions that grow stronger or closer together, persistent backache or pelvic pressure, and changes such as a mucus plug, bleeding, or leaking fluid.

What may help

Pause, drink water, rest, and observe the timing and duration of each tightening. A warm shower or a gentle change of position may be comforting if your maternity team has said these are suitable. Do not rely on a home check to decide whether labour has started; call your maternity unit when the pattern concerns you or differs from advice you were given.

When to contact your maternity team

Contact your maternity unit urgently for regular painful contractions, leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, strong pelvic pressure, severe abdominal or back pain, fever, or reduced fetal movements. If these symptoms occur before the stage of pregnancy your team considers term, they may indicate Preterm Labour and require prompt assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how your unit defines a concerning contraction pattern, which number to call day or night, how to monitor movements, and when to come in for an examination.

Questions people ask

Can Braxton Hicks contractions be painful?

They can feel uncomfortable or tight, but pain that is strong, progressive, or regular should be discussed with your maternity team.

Can rest make them ease?

Rest, hydration, or changing position may reduce practice tightenings, but improvement does not replace assessment when warning symptoms are present.
