What should you know about exosomes and stem cells?

Exosomes are tiny membrane-bound packages released by cells. They can carry proteins and other signals between cells, but they do not grow into new tissue. Stem cells are living cells that can self-renew and, depending on their type and setting, develop into specialised cells. A product marketed as containing exosomes is therefore not the same as a stem-cell treatment.

In aesthetic care, exosome products may be discussed alongside procedures intended to support skin repair or improve the appearance of texture. The source, processing, storage, route of use, and intended purpose all affect how a product should be assessed. Marketing language alone cannot establish that a treatment is suitable or effective for your skin.

Ask the clinician to identify the exact product, its source, how it is prepared, and whether it is applied to the skin or introduced through a procedure. Share allergies, active rashes, cold sores, immune conditions, medicines, and any tendency to form raised scars. A proper consultation should also explain expected skin reactions, aftercare, alternatives, and what evidence supports the proposed use.

After a procedure, seek prompt medical advice for worsening pain, spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, fever, facial swelling, blistering, or changes in vision. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue needs emergency care. Do not delay assessment while waiting for a cosmetic result to settle.
