What should you know about excessive itching on feet?

Short answer
Excessive itching on the feet can come from dryness, irritation, inflammation, infection, or an infestation, so the skin’s appearance and timing matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common clues
- Scale, cracks, blisters, and night-time itch can help distinguish causes.
- Skin care
- Keep feet dry while moisturising dry, non-weeping areas.
- Urgency
- Fever, pus, spreading redness, or breathing symptoms need prompt care.
What the itch may show
Dry, cracked skin can itch more after hot showers or frequent washing. Redness or scaling between the toes may occur with a fungal or yeast-related problem. Contact Dermatitis can follow exposure to footwear materials, detergents, creams, or adhesives. Atopic Dermatitis and Asteatotic Eczema can cause dryness and an itchy barrier. Psoriasis or Lichen Planus may produce persistent, defined or rough patches. Scabies often causes intense itch and may affect household contacts, while Hives produce raised areas that come and go.
The same symptom can have different causes. Note whether there is scale, blisters, cracks, swelling, a rash elsewhere, or itch that is worse at night. This information helps guide an examination.
Comfort and care
Wash with lukewarm water, use a fragrance-free cleanser, dry carefully between the toes, and apply a plain moisturiser to dry areas. Keep feet cool and dry, change damp socks, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels or footwear if a contagious rash is possible. Avoid applying steroid, antifungal, or antiseptic products repeatedly without checking that they fit the skin problem.
A clinician can distinguish eczema, psoriasis, contact irritation, yeast infection, scabies, and other causes by examining the distribution and surface of the rash.
When to seek medical care
Arrange an assessment if itching persists, keeps returning, spreads, disrupts sleep, or causes cracks and bleeding. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, or a rash with facial swelling or breathing difficulty. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should seek advice sooner when the skin breaks.
Questions worth asking
What does the location and surface of the rash suggest? Could footwear, a product, eczema, psoriasis, infection, or scabies be involved? Which treatment should I use, and for how long? How can I prevent recurrence or protect household contacts?

Questions people ask
Can dry skin cause very itchy feet?
Yes. A weakened skin barrier can itch and crack, particularly after frequent washing, hot water, or dry conditions.
When might itchy feet be an infection?
Scaling between toes, moist irritation, cracks, odour, or a spreading rash can be clues, but examination is needed for diagnosis.
