Short answer

Nursing burnout is work-related exhaustion and detachment that can affect concentration, sleep, mood, and confidence.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Individual symptoms and workplace pressures together.

What burnout can look like

Burnout may build when demanding work, limited recovery, low control, or repeated emotional strain continue for too long. A nurse may notice fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, feeling anxious, difficulty sleeping, or loss of libido. These symptoms can overlap with depression, anxiety, insomnia, physical illness, or medication effects, so a label should not be assumed from tiredness alone. Workplace conditions matter as much as individual coping.

Steps that may help

Speak privately with a trusted supervisor, occupational-health service, GP, or mental-health professional. Describe workload, shifts, sleep, mood, and any effect on safe practice. Ask about protected breaks, staffing concerns, temporary adjustments, supervision, and confidential support. Keep regular meals, hydration, sleep routines, and restorative activity where possible, but do not treat self-care as a substitute for fixing unsafe workload or seeking clinical help.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment when exhaustion, low mood, anxiety, sleep problems, or concentration changes persist or interfere with work or daily life. Seek urgent help if you feel unable to keep yourself or patients safe, have thoughts of self-harm, or cannot function. A clinician can check for medical and psychological contributors and help plan support.

Questions for your doctor

Could another health problem be contributing to these symptoms? What support or work adjustments might help? Should I be assessed for insomnia, anxiety, depression, or another condition?
