ET embryo transfer: what to know

During embryo transfer, the clinician guides a thin catheter through the cervix and releases the embryo into the uterus. The procedure is usually brief, but sensations and local arrangements vary. Embryo transfer is one stage of IVF, not the same as egg collection or embryo creation.

Progesterone may be prescribed to support the uterine lining. It can cause effects such as breast tenderness, bloating, discharge, tiredness, or mood changes, which can overlap with early pregnancy symptoms. These sensations cannot confirm whether implantation has occurred; only the clinic's planned follow-up can answer that question.

Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines, appointments, bladder preparation, and the pregnancy test date. Continue prescribed progesterone unless the fertility team tells you otherwise. Gentle daily activity is generally preferable to treating yourself as immobile, but follow any procedure-specific restrictions. Contact the clinic before taking new medicines or supplements, and keep their emergency number accessible.

Contact your fertility team promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fainting, fever, marked abdominal swelling, vomiting, or shortness of breath. These symptoms can need assessment after fertility treatment and should not be judged by the outcome of the pregnancy test. Follow emergency services advice if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening.

Ask which embryo is being transferred, what medicines to continue, which activities or symptoms should prompt a call, and exactly when testing is planned. Ask how progesterone should be used, what result will happen next, and who to contact outside clinic hours.
