What should you know about erythema intertrigo?

Short answer

Erythema intertrigo is a red, irritated rash that develops where warm, moist skin folds rub together, and it may become infected.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common locations
Underarms, groin, beneath breasts, abdominal folds, and between the buttocks
Main triggers
Moisture, heat, friction, and limited airflow
Possible complication
Yeast or bacterial infection in damaged skin

What erythema intertrigo means

The irritation commonly affects the underarms, groin, beneath the breasts, abdominal folds, or between the buttocks. Heat, sweat, trapped moisture, and friction weaken the skin barrier. The area can look bright red or darker than nearby skin, feel sore or itchy, and develop cracks, oozing, a smell, or a burning sensation.

A yeast or bacterial overgrowth can develop in the damaged skin. A yeast-related fold rash is called cutaneous candidiasis; it may have small spots or bumps just beyond the main red patch. Intertrigo can also be mistaken for eczema, contact irritation, or another skin condition, so appearance alone does not identify the cause.

What you can do

Gently wash the fold, rinse away cleanser, and pat it completely dry rather than rubbing. Change out of sweaty clothing promptly and choose loose, breathable fabrics. Keep the fold separated with clean, dry clothing or a soft piece of gauze; replace it when damp. Avoid fragranced products and avoid applying steroid cream or combination creams without medical advice, because they can irritate skin or conceal an infection.

If the rash is persistent, recurrent, spreading, or very uncomfortable, a clinician can check whether yeast, bacteria, friction, or another condition is involved. Treatment may include a topical antifungal when yeast is suspected, while a different medicine may be needed for another cause. Follow the prescribed directions and keep the area dry while it heals.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical assessment if the rash does not improve with careful drying and friction reduction, keeps returning, or involves broken skin. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, worsening pain, pus, a strong new odour, fever, or red streaks. These changes can signal a spreading infection. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or difficulty healing should seek advice earlier when a fold rash appears.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could this be intertrigo, yeast, bacteria, or a different rash? What should I use on the area, and for how long? How can I prevent moisture and rubbing in this fold? Does a recurring rash need assessment for an underlying condition?

Questions people ask

Is erythema intertrigo contagious?

Intertrigo caused by friction, heat, and moisture is not contagious. If an infection is present, the cause and needed precautions depend on the organism, so a clinician can advise you.

Can I prevent intertrigo from returning?

Reduce sweat and rubbing by drying folds carefully, changing damp clothing, wearing breathable fabrics, and using clean dry fabric to separate touching surfaces. Recurrent episodes deserve a medical review.
