ERG immunohistochemistry: what to know

A pathologist applies an antibody stain to thin sections of preserved tissue. If ERG is present in the expected cells, the stain produces a visible pattern under a microscope. ERG can support recognition of blood-vessel lining and can also provide a clue in selected cancers, including some prostate tumours.

The result is not a diagnosis on its own. The pathologist combines staining location and intensity with cell appearance, the biopsy findings, clinical information, and other stains. A positive or negative result can therefore have different significance in different tissues.

Ask which cells stained, why ERG was selected, and how the result fits the rest of the pathology report. If the diagnosis remains uncertain, the laboratory may use additional stains or request expert review. A biopsy discussion can explain whether more tissue or another procedure is needed.

The stain itself does not usually create a new symptom because it is performed on tissue already collected. Seek care for biopsy-site bleeding that does not settle, increasing redness, swelling, fever, worsening pain, or any symptom your procedure team specifically highlighted.
