What should you know about equine brucellosis?

Brucellosis is a bacterial infection that can follow contact with infected animals or contaminated animal materials. Exposure risk depends on the animal, setting, and contact with blood, birth products, tissues, or unpasteurised products. Illness may begin with fever, tiredness, muscle aches, joint pain, or night sweats, and symptoms can fluctuate. These symptoms are not specific, so a symptom alone does not establish brucellosis.

Tell a clinician about the animal contact, date, work activities, protective equipment, and any unpasteurised food exposure. Do not handle suspected animal tissues without appropriate protection, and follow local veterinary or public-health advice. A clinician may arrange blood testing and decide whether treatment is needed. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and complete the planned course unless the prescriber changes it.

Seek prompt medical review for ongoing fever, drenching night sweats, marked weakness, swollen or painful joints, or worsening muscle aches after relevant exposure. Seek urgent help for confusion, severe headache, breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening illness. Mention pregnancy, immune problems, or major organ symptoms because these can affect evaluation and follow-up.

Ask which exposures are relevant, whether a blood test is appropriate, when results should be reviewed, whether household members need advice, and how treatment will be monitored.
