The clip uses light passing through a fingertip to estimate oxygen carried in the blood and also displays pulse rate. A reading can be affected by cold fingers, movement, nail products, poor circulation, or an imperfect fit. The device does not diagnose the cause of breathing difficulty and cannot replace an examination in someone who looks unwell.

Rest quietly, warm the hand, and place the clip on a clean finger. Keep the hand still and wait for the display to settle before recording it. Repeat an unexpected result and note the time, pulse, symptoms, and whether you were resting. Follow any personalised target given by your clinician rather than relying on a generic threshold.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, collapse, or inability to speak comfortably. Seek prompt advice for worsening breathing, unusual drowsiness, or a persistently concerning reading after checking the device and your positioning. Do not delay help while repeatedly testing if you feel seriously ill.
