Short answer

Episodic depression causes periods of persistent low mood, reduced interest, and changes in thinking, sleep, energy, or appetite that may ease and return.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What episodic depression means

An episode is a distinct period in which depressive symptoms affect daily life, relationships, work, study, or self-care. Some people feel slowed down and exhausted; others feel restless, irritable, or unable to settle. Concentration can become difficult, and sleep may involve early waking, sleeping more, or trouble falling asleep. Feeling anxious may occur alongside depression, but anxiety does not define the condition. Symptoms can improve between episodes, although mood changes deserve attention even when a person is functioning.

A clinician considers the pattern, duration, impact, medical history, medicines, substance use, and any past periods of unusually elevated mood or reduced need for sleep. This helps distinguish depression from conditions with overlapping symptoms. Related experiences may include [Fatigue](/symptoms/fatigue/) or [Difficulty Concentrating](/symptoms/difficulty-concentrating/), but either symptom can have causes other than depression.

What you can do

Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or make ordinary tasks harder. Keep a simple record of mood, sleep, energy, appetite, medicines, and triggers; this can help reveal a pattern. Protect regular meals, gentle movement, daylight exposure, and a consistent sleep routine where possible. Reduce alcohol or non-prescribed drugs, which can worsen mood or disrupt sleep. Psychological therapy, social support, and prescribed treatment may be used alone or together. Do not stop an antidepressant suddenly without advice. [Depression](/conditions/depression/) and [Insomnia](/conditions/insomnia/) provide related information.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help now if you are thinking about suicide, self-harm, or harming someone else, or if you cannot keep yourself safe. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. Prompt medical review is also needed for severe inability to eat or drink, confusion, hallucinations, or a sudden change in behaviour. If symptoms are worsening without immediate danger, contact a doctor or mental-health professional soon and tell someone you trust.

Questions for your doctor

Could another medical condition or medicine be contributing to these symptoms? What treatment options fit my pattern? How should I monitor a returning episode, and who should I contact if my mood worsens?

Questions people ask

Can depression return after I feel better?

Yes. Symptoms can recur, so noticing early changes in sleep, energy, interest, or mood can support timely care.

Is trouble sleeping part of depression?

It can be. Depression may also cause sleeping more, fatigue, or daytime sleepiness; these symptoms can have other causes too.
