Is an episiotomy considered surgery?

Although it happens during childbirth, an episiotomy is still an incision through perineal tissue. It may be used when a rapid birth is needed, an assisted vaginal birth is taking place, or a tear needs to be directed away from vulnerable structures. It is different from a caesarean birth because it does not involve opening the abdomen or uterus. The clinician examines the area afterward and repairs the affected layers.

Treat the wound as a healing surgical site: follow instructions for washing, pads, pain relief, movement, and bowel care. Keep follow-up appointments or request one if symptoms are interfering with sitting, walking, urination, or bowel movements. Emotional reactions also deserve attention; a difficult or unexpected birth experience can be discussed with your maternity team.

Ask for medical advice if pain becomes stronger, redness or swelling spreads, fever develops, discharge smells unpleasant, bleeding is heavy, or the wound seems to separate. Seek urgent care for severe pain, faintness, or loss of bowel control. These findings are not a test of how well you cared for the wound; they need professional assessment.

Ask what prompted the incision, which structures were involved, how repair was completed, what recovery limits apply, and when pelvic floor or wound review is appropriate.
