What happens during an episiotomy procedure?

If an episiotomy is needed, the clinician explains the reason when circumstances allow and provides local anesthetic or checks that existing pain relief is effective. A controlled incision is made in the perineum during birth. Once the baby and placenta are delivered, the area is examined for the extent of the cut or any additional tear. Dissolving stitches are then used to close the layers, and the team checks bleeding and comfort.

Use the wound-care and pain-relief plan given by your maternity team. Gentle washing, changing pads regularly, and preventing constipation can support comfort; follow your clinician’s specific advice about activity. Sitting, walking, urinating, and bowel movements may feel different for a while. Tell the team if pain limits these activities, if the wound is difficult to inspect, or if you are worried about healing.

Contact your maternity service for pain that is increasing, new redness or swelling, fever, unpleasant discharge, fresh heavy bleeding, or a wound gap. Seek urgent help for severe pain, faintness, or feeling seriously unwell. An examination can identify infection, bleeding beneath the skin, or separation and guide treatment.
