What should you know about Epilog CO2 laser?
Updated

Short answer
Epilog CO2 laser refers to a carbon dioxide laser platform that resurfaces skin through controlled heat and treatment depth.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Energy type
- Infrared carbon dioxide laser energy.
- Main recovery issues
- Redness, swelling, crusting and peeling can occur.
What the treatment does
A CO2 laser delivers infrared energy to the skin. Depending on the settings, it removes a controlled amount of surface skin and heats deeper layers, encouraging wound healing and collagen remodelling. It may be considered for texture changes, selected scars, lines and sun-damaged skin. The device name alone does not determine suitability: treatment intensity, area, skin tone, active skin disease and the clinician’s technique all affect the plan. Fractional delivery leaves untreated skin between treated columns, while fully ablative treatment affects a broader surface.
Preparing and recovering
Before treatment, disclose a history of cold sores, keloid scarring, pigment changes, recent tanning, active acne or infection, and all medicines and skincare products. Follow the clinic’s instructions about cleansing, sun avoidance and prescribed antiviral or other preparation. Afterward, expect redness, swelling, heat, crusting or peeling while the surface heals. Keep the area clean and protected, do not pick flakes, and use only products approved for the recovery phase. Sun protection helps reduce darkening while new skin is vulnerable.
When to seek care
Contact the treating clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, increasing swelling, delayed healing or an eye symptom. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, severe facial swelling, vision changes or rapidly worsening illness. A sudden blistering eruption or a new cluster of painful blisters also needs prompt review, especially with a history of cold sores.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which resurfacing depth and delivery pattern are planned, what improvement is realistic for your concern, how long healing may take, and how pigment risk will be managed. Ask about anaesthesia, wound care, sun protection and alternatives.
